Tulum Flights: 5 New Nonstop Routes From October 25
Starting October 25, Tulum airport (TQO) adds five new nonstop destinations: Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Quebec City and Newark. That’s seven weekly flights across four airlines — Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet and United — and most of them run through April 2027. If you’ve been flying into Cancún out of habit, check again before you book this winter.
The new routes, with dates and days
This is what’s published as of September 2026. These are seasonal flights: they run through the winter and then come off the schedule.
| Airline | From | Starts | Through | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Air Transat | Montreal | Oct 25, 2026 | Apr 18, 2027 | Sundays |
| Air Canada | Montreal | Oct 29, 2026 | Apr 8, 2027 | Thursdays |
| Air Canada | Toronto | Oct 25, 2026 | Apr 11, 2027 | Sundays |
| WestJet | Toronto | Oct 31, 2026 | Apr 24, 2027 | Thursdays, Saturdays |
| WestJet | Calgary | Oct 29, 2026 | season | Thursdays, Saturdays |
| Air Transat | Quebec City | Oct 25, 2026 | season | Sundays |
| United | Newark (NJ) | Dec 17, 2026 | Jan 24, 2027 | Thursdays, Sundays |
Two things that are easy to miss if you skim the table. First, Montreal and Toronto each have two carriers on different days — if one gets you in on a Thursday and you need a Sunday, check the other before defaulting to Cancún. Second, Calgary and Quebec City have announced start dates but no published end date yet, so for March or April travel you’ll need to confirm.
The Newark route is five weeks, not a season
The only new US route is United from Newark, and it runs December 17 to January 24. Five weeks, built around the holidays: the most expensive window of the year and the one that sells out first.
Practically speaking, if you’re on the East Coast and want it, now is the time to buy. And if your trip falls in February or March, that route won’t help you — it’s already finished — so you’re back to choosing between the usual TQO gateways (Houston, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta) or landing in Cancún.
Why this is news and not routine
TQO opened in December 2023 with a long list of announced routes, then deflated. Over the course of 2026 international connections dropped from 12 to 4, and international traffic fell by more than 30%. American, JetBlue and Air Canada had already cut frequencies back in 2025. The airport closed 2025 with 1.2 million passengers — for scale, Punta Cana moved 11 million that same year.
So these five routes aren’t expansion, they’re ground being won back. That matters to your decision for one practical reason: a route existing last year says nothing about whether it exists on your travel dates, and the reverse is also true — routes that weren’t there six months ago are now. It’s a moving calendar, not a fixed fact you can assume.
If you’re weighing the two airports properly — travel times, transfer costs, when each one makes sense — we broke it down in Tulum airport or Cancún.
Landing to La Veleta: 40 minutes
Here’s the real difference flying into TQO, and it’s the part most people leave out when comparing airfare. From Tulum airport you’re in the neighborhood where we live in about 40 minutes: the ADO bus costs $220 MXN, a private transfer runs around $1,900 MXN. Tulum’s ADO terminal is 9 minutes from our coliving.
From Cancún the same trip is 1h40 to 2 hours — ADO at $455 MXN plus a local taxi, or roughly $2,300 MXN for a private transfer. That math matters when the Cancún flight is, say, 60 dollars cheaper: between the extra transfer and two hours on the highway after a long flight, the savings eat themselves.
Staying for months? Look at the return
Most people who stay with us for a full season arrive between October and December and leave between March and April. That happens to be almost exactly the calendar these routes run on: they start in late October and close somewhere between April 8 and April 24.
Which creates a specific problem. Everyone books the outbound well in advance; plenty of people leave the return open because they don’t yet know how long they’ll stay. If your plan is to leave “sometime in April,” note that the end dates differ by route: Air Canada from Montreal finishes April 8, Air Canada from Toronto April 11, Air Transat April 18, WestJet April 24. Extending your stay by two weeks can mean your nonstop no longer exists and you’re going home via Cancún or with a connection.
That’s not a reason to lock the return today. It is a reason to know your cutoff date before you decide on the fly.
What to check before you book
Four things, in order:
- Your exact travel date, not the month. These routes have fixed weekdays — a once-weekly flight means that if you want to arrive on a Tuesday, there is no flight.
- The season end date. For March and April trips, confirm with the airline: several of these routes finish in early April and two have no published end date.
- The return leg. The outbound existing doesn’t mean the return works on your date — these are weekly frequencies in both directions.
- Your transfer, before you land. If you’re arriving at night, have it arranged in advance.
One more thing if you’re still picking dates: the Newark window lands squarely on New Year’s, the most expensive stretch of the year in Tulum for both flights and accommodation. Mid-January onward, and March into April, tend to come in noticeably cheaper.
Once you’ve got the flight, book direct with us: we’re in La Veleta, 40 minutes from TQO, and the rate beats the platforms.
