How to get from Cancun to Tulum (2026): ADO, transfer or rental

The cheapest route from Cancun to Tulum costs ~$650 MXN and takes about 2 hours: ADO bus + taxi. The most comfortable, ~$2,300 MXN door to door. And since December 2023 there’s a third option many people still don’t consider: flying straight into Tulum’s airport and being at your apartment in 40 minutes. Case by case — we verify these prices with guests every week.

Option 1: ADO + taxi (the budget one)

• ADO bus from Cancun airport to downtown Tulum: $455 MXN (~$25 USD). Regular departures, A/C, ~1h40 ride. Buy at the terminal or on the ADO app.
• Downtown Tulum to La Veleta: taxi $150-200 MXN (~10 min).
• Total: $650 MXN ($35 USD) and about 2 hours door to door.

The trick: if you land at night, check the last ADO departure before booking your flight. And negotiate the taxi BEFORE getting in — Tulum taxis have a well-earned reputation.

Option 2: private transfer (the comfortable one)

$2,300 MXN ($125 USD) from Cancun airport straight to your door in Tulum. It makes sense if: 2+ people arrive (split it and it nearly matches ADO per head), you’re hauling luggage, or you land late and don’t want to deal with connections.

For our guests we coordinate the transfer before arrival — you request it through your booking portal and the driver waits with your name on a sign. Zero haggling at 11pm.

Option 3: fly straight to Tulum (the one people forget)

Tulum airport (TQO) has been operating since late 2023 with domestic and international flights. From there: ADO to downtown $220 MXN or private transfer ~$1,900 MXN, and you’re ~40 minutes away.

Before defaulting to Cancun, check if your route flies to TQO: sometimes the airfare difference pays for itself in saved time and transfer costs.

What about renting a car?

For LIVING in Tulum: almost never worth it. The town is compact, a scooter solves 95% of your trips, and beach parking is a contact sport. Rent a car only for one-off getaways (Bacalar, Holbox, far ruins) — by the day, not by the month. For daily life, a scooter costs a fraction and parks anywhere.

One last thing: keep the return trip in mind. In high season, buy your return ADO a day ahead — seats sell out faster than flights.
